ANDY SULAIMAN

Focused on fashion that’s sustainable, contemporary and comfortable with a sterling quality, award-winning menswear designer ANDY SULAIMAN creates clothes that are seasonless and everlasting.

HE may have graduated with a business degree from a university in San Francisco, USA but Andy Sulaiman’s career journey brought him to a different path – one that would bring out the very best in him, which is fashion design.

It comes as no surprise that the self-taught designer walked away with the Best Costume Award at the 2019 Malaysian Film Festival for the horror-thriller film Dukun.

“I got into fashion by accident actually, but my interest in the creative field has always been there,” says the designer who celebrates his 54th birthday this month.

His first foray in fashion design was in 2004 when Andy was entrusted to create menswear for Tom Abang Saufi Homme.

He has since “graduated” to designing under his own label ANDY SULAIMAN and his latest line is available online at www.andysulaiman.com and Collab Store at the swanky Shoppes at Four Seasons Place, the retail showcase at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Ampang.
His namesake label can also be viewed and purchased via e-commerce giants Zalora, Lazada and Poptron.

There’s a variety of design pieces to choose from and they comprise safari jackets, bomber jackets, trousers, bermudas, t-shirts, shirts and more.

The colour palette includes black, beige, white, navy, red, blue and mango – the three latter shades provide punch and panache to the collection.

And, check out Andy’s signature loose-fitting shirt detailed with a pussy bow (a knot with two curved parts and two loose ends at the neckline) that’s stylish and statement-making. This season’s variation comes in black linen.

“I just love the pussy bow shirt because it can be worn with jeans for that carefree, chic look or paired with tailored trousers for elegant evenings. Every collection of mine will have this particular style but each time I’ll update it in terms of colour and material,” explains the designer who has dressed actors Farid Kamil, Keith Foo,  Zulkifli Ariffin and Zul Ariffin to name a few.

Complementing Andy’s ready-to-wear is a modern, minimalist timepiece void of superfluous details without sacrificing style, creativity and elegance.

The chronograph watch comes in a choice of black or white dials and tan-coloured leather and black mock-croc leather straps respectively.

As for who wears his brand, Andy says: “The brand’s target customers are men who have a keen interest in art, architecture and design. They travel in search of new experience to fulfill their curiosities. They know about good design, they read blogs and into architectural photography … these are particularly important to them. They don’t want to look like they are trying too hard but want that easygoing, clean-lined and elegant style.”

champion of sustainability. Which is why, he only uses natural fabrics such as linen and cotton, and he makes sure his creations are of supreme quality so that they last long and contribute to waste reduction.

The collections are produced from fabrics of natural fiber which are locally sourced from artisans, thereby cutting down on carbon footprint (as opposed to having imported fabrics which are shipped in).  These fabrics contain no synthetic elements and their production processes are eco-friendly which in turn makes them easy to maintain and clean (Dry cleaning is not required; this saves water and is more energy efficient). He does not use any form of chemical bleaching and synthetic dyes; thereby reducing the toxic load on the environment, and they are especially beneficial to customers who have skin sensitivity issues.

“Everything I create will have that feeling of quality because I like the idea of people buying something and then keeping it. It’s not just a purchase that only makes sense for a season, trend or for quick kicks. It goes way beyond that – the feeling when you know you will take care of that garment like you would an heirloom and you know you would wear it again and again as it surpasses any passing trend. The idea is to promote zero waste and reduce excessive purchase and consumption.”

Andy’s ethical effort goes well with the brand’s tagline, “Thoughtfully made, artfully crafted.”

Where does Andy get his design inspiration from? “I don’t think like a traditional designer when it comes to ideas and inspiration. I think of what can sell and what people can wear every single day – clothing items that are suitable to our design taste and climate.”

The designer who gives us a hint of his next collection, which will feature outfits in darker tones like olive, charcoal and dark blue that can be worn daily as well as for the upcoming Hari Raya festive season, says that ultimately he wants ANDY SULAIMAN to be a lifestyle brand.

“My goal is for this to be a lifestyle brand where it’s not only about ready-to-wear but also accessories, furniture and a café. It’s also my desire to have a few stores in the country including one in my hometown, Kuching, Sarawak. I’m not that ambitious by wanting to go worldwide but if it happens, I would be elated.
